I have to admit that I’m a real show off when it comes to talking about my holidays on Facebook. My friends and followers may remember that picture of me in a convertible Mustang on my California jaunt a few weeks ago!
Like many others out there I can’t help telling people when I’ve booked a fab trip and find myself taking pictures in amazing places on my phone just to I can tweet them.
And it seems I’m not alone. Our own researchers found that the rise in popularity of social networking has created a jealous streak in us Brits, with more than half of us putting our holiday snaps on our profiles to show off where we’ve been. Now the latest trend is copycat holidays – where friends love the sound of where you’ve been so much they go and book it themselves.
Researchers found that one in four Brits have booked an exotic holiday – after suffering from holiday envy over a friend’s foreign trip. After seeing the Facebook photos on a friend’s profile, 13 per cent of people have gone on to book a similar holiday, while another six per cent have arranged a break after seeing someone’s status.
Social networking sites make it easier than ever to gloat about where you’ve been or where you are going. More people are updating their status from their sunlounger or posting photos of themselves at the airport, on the beach or next to a world famous landmark, so it’s not surprising that anyone reading it wants some of the excitement for themselves.
Australia was named as the destination most likely to leave others feeling jealous, followed by the Caribbean islands of the Bahamas and Barbados.
The USA, Maldives, New Zealand, Mauritius, Seychelles and Canada also featured in the top ten.
Have you ever booked a trip after spotting friends’ pictures on Facebook or seeing a tweet/status update?
